Geographic Tongue: the paintings
Gerhardt (The Drunkard's Dream)
mixed media on canvas
Canvas was stretched over jig-saw cut plywood and gessoed. Collaged into the painting is a small drawing on cardboard, of an older man that reminds me of my maternal grandfather, and a diagram from an instructional book on bobbin stitch lace. As I grow older and raise a family of my own, I have become interested in the idea of blood lines and heredity. I find myself inventing fictional or speculative ancestors in my drawings.

Enter the Volcano
Here's a detail from So Far From Home showing the hole cut in the upper middle of the canvas. Through the hole you can see a drawing of a volcano. You can also see two sections of the painting that have been pinned in place. The fiery ball over the young woman's face is also pinned on.
Bluegrass Acupuncture
Here's a detail from Bluegrass Acupuncture, another large painting on loose canvas. A chunk of black coal (carved from insulation foam) dangles from above.
