Geographic Tongue (my ghost likes to travel)
Geographic Tongue (my ghost likes to travel) was installed at loop gallery in Toronto from October 31st to November 22nd. While this series started out as abstract explorations of organically shaped canvases, eventually figures and faces began to materialize. Some of the faces reminded me of dead ancestors and friends. Around this time I was listening to a lot of Peter Gabriel music and a lyric from the song Growing Up really grabbed me. The lyric goes ... "my ghost likes to travel ... so deep into your space". The lyric haunted me as did these visitors. Eventually I accepted them as ghosts.

in the gallery
The painting in the picture above is called So Far From Home. It was painted on loose unstretched canvas and has been installed using push pins. Folds and ripples in the canvas create a three dimensional landscape element to the work. It may be hard to tell from the photo but a hole cut in the middle upper section opens up to a drawing of a volcano. Several parts of the painting are pinned on temporarily. Each time I show this painting the result will be slightly different. Click on the Paintings tab above to see more paintings and details.
The painting to the left is called Grace's Sad Smile. The title refers to my maternal grandmother.

Mr. Prim takes a trip down river
Here is a long view of the gallery with the installation of a floor based sculptural piece called "Mr. Prim takes a trip down river". The river is made of bubble wrap and duct tape. Mr Prim is a Day of the Dead figure who's appeared in a number of my shows. Mr. Prim's raft is made from a wooden Ikea shelf.
another gallery view with owl sentinel
Here's another view which nicely captures the drawing installation with the paintings. An owl decoy (with hoots and swiveling head operated by motion sensors) sits as sentinel on the desk. A number of paintings also contain owl images. I don't know why so don't ask.
This trio of paintings all adhere to the Geographic Tongue template. The writing above the paintings read "my ghost likes to travel ... so deep into your space."
